The March issue of Owl Magazine is out, featuring 2 illustrations! The images were commissioned to accompany the cover ‘story’, a focus on mountaineering.
The first, an image of a young climber, required a creative way to showcase the various gear a climber would pack, with enough space for the layout designer to place labels. The solution was to playfully imply that the backpack had opened, with items falling out mid-climb. I love drawing various object so this was pretty satisfying to work through.
The second was a showcase of the Seven Summits, the tallest mountains of the seven continents. The challenges here were to differentiate visually and technically between each, and to present their respective heights in a relative ratio. To emphasize the beauty and majesty of these mountains, I rendered the final image in a more graphic than cartoon manner.
I’m really happy with the final artwork, and the great feedback along the way from Associate AD Liz Vogan and Creative Director Faith Cochran. Looking forward to working with the Owl team again in future!
